Nippon Challenge Race Race 8 and 9 – Cadwell Park Race Report

28th June 2009

We arrived trackside early on Friday as we were doing a test day on Saturday to get a feel of the track and allow us to do some final adjustments to the car.

Test day went very well, we spent 2 hours on track and got our time down to 1mins 43sec.

We were very happy with the result, however we soon realised the rear engine mount bracket had snapped in 2. There was nothing we could do about it so we just hopeed for the best that is was going to be fine for the race.
Qualify
We got stuck in the middle of the pack and got held up by slow traffic, so the qualifying didn’t go very well, our best lap was a 1 min 46secs which put us 7th overall and 3rd in class. After qualifying, we had another problem, the outer driveshaft CV had snapped and was leaking gearbox oil. We temporarily fixed them with Cable ties and glue in hope that it was going to be good for the race.

Race 1
We had a pretty good start and managed to jump a few places and got myself up into 5th, I think this was down to Carbonetic giving us an amazing twin plate clutch which made the launch much easier, so thanks to Carbonetic :) . Lap 2 Michael EK outbroke himself and went straight into the tyre wall allowing us to gain another place. The MR2 also blew their engine at the other side of the track leaving a lot of oil spillage on the track meaning the safety car was called out for the next 4 laps. When the safety car finally went back into the pits we only had 2 laps left. My car was suffer heavily with understeer, due to the gearbox oil leaking to the passenger side front tyre. We finished 5th overall and 2nd in class.

Race 1 result
1st Kris – Orange EK
2nd Dixon – K20 DC2
3rd Andre – Accord
DNF – Michael K20 EK.

Race 2
We had a really good start again and jumped one place up to 4th and managed keep up with Kris EK for 2 laps which was hard because his car was really quick due to pulling a lot more power than us. After 2 laps, due to a shifter failure we lost 2nd and 4th gears and saw Kris pull a big gap from us.

So I finished the race in 2nd in class again and 4th overall. Surprisingly we still lapped 1 mins 43 secs with all those problems, it was still a fantastic result for us and we are happy with the 2nd place.

We now have a 6 week break until the end of August when we are at Snetterton. We will be there with a new engine from DMF performance which will hopefully give us around 250bhp and all issues from Cadwell will be ironed out.

After the successful race at Pembrey 3 weeks ago, we understand now our aero package is working very well on the track but the front splitter design was too weak to support all the downforce its create and caused us a DNF due to the splitter drop to the ground at the 3rd race back in Pembrey. Also we notice our splitter was sitting below the legal limit by 10mm so when we got back to our workshop we have a complete new design which allow us to adjust the splitter back up to the 75mm legal limit or to wherever we wanted depends on the track condition.

Silverstone is always the track I don’t enjoy much because lack of corners and also our car is down on power, so we didn’t expect a good result there. However we looked at the weather report on Friday morning and forecasting heavy rain is expected on the race day, we were all excited by this great news as we know we have better advantage to setup our car in the wet condition. So we put our car back on the alignment machine and gave a wet track setup before we left to Silverstone.

Qualify –
The track got even more wet in the morning, 4th gear wheels spinning on the main straight wet! I ran out to test the grip level for a few laps , the car was handling very well even on worn R888 semi slick, with the others are running cut R888 in our class, I did one fast lap just before the last lap and did a 1mins 21.1 put us on top of our class and 6 overall. All the car in front of us are in either GT300 or 500 bhp class and all 4 wheels drive.
Result –
GT250 class
Pole (6th overall) – Dixon Cheng (DMS DC2 running Semi slick) 1mins 21.1
2nd (8th overall)– Andre (ex-btcc accord) 1 mins 22.1
3rd (14th overall)– Kris (orange Civic) 1 mins 24
4th (18th overall) Paul G (DC5 integra) 1 mins 25.1
5th (20th overall) Michael (K20 ITB civic) 1 mins 25.49

Race 1 –
After the qualify, we made a few fine tuning on the suspension and tyres pressure for the race one.
Had a pretty good start with and a few subarus spun on the first corner so we took the 4th place overall and lead my class from there. The track was even more wet then in qualify and it was almost impossible to put the foot down on the straight even on 4th gear mainly due to the worn R888, but it was fun and manageable, The whole race was pretty relax and I was taking it very easy until the end.

Race 1 result –
1st DC2 – Dixon cheng (4th overall)
2nd EK – Kris (5th overall)
3rd EK – Michael (11th overall)
4th Accord – Andre (13th overall)
DNF – Paul G

Race 2 –
After race 1 it was a big relief for us because we know our car is very competitive in this wet condition with our wet track alignment setup and aero package so we relax a little and even setup a BBQ in our pit just before the race 2 only later when we line up on the grid and I started on 6th position, I notice Kris have a new grid position which sit right behind me so I thought this race is going to be more interesting as he is running on Wet cut slick and I was still running on worn R888 Semi Slick
The start wasn’t too bad and I close the door to block Kris to overtake me before the turn 1 and got Kris behind me, it was a huge relief as I know the track is still very wet and I saw myself pulling a gap from him after the first lap so I just focus in battling with the Subaru in front of me. We had a great battle and in lap 6 he made a mistake at turn 1 so I got up a place into 5th. From then it was pretty relax like on the race one and we finished in 1st again in our GT250 class and 5th overall with only 7 secs behind the GT500 class Mitsubishi EVO.
We also got the fastest lap in our class with 1 mins 19s.

Race 2 result
1st DC2 – Dixon Cheng (5th overall)
2nd EK – Kris (6th Overall)
3rd EK – Michale (12th overall)
4th DC5 – Paul G (23rd overall)
DNF –Andre due to the crash at turn 1

Once again, it was a great weekend for us as we know we finally have a completely legal and competitive car in this season and our setup work well on the track. Although we have now won a few races, we will not stop our development and we will bring out a better car with new chassis and aero upgrade for Cadwell park on 28th June.

Great thanks to our sponsors, without any of their support we won’t have a successful season like this –

Need to special thanks to Dixcel Brake at this round as they providing the excellent Carbon disk and pad which can work from this extreme condition when the others are having problem to get their brake into temperature and we already have full braking power from the first corner until the end without any problem.

Nippon Challenge Race Race 3,4 and 5 – Pembray Race Report

18th May 2009

After our last race at Snetterton, we understand our car didn’t have the power we expected when we saw our competitor from our class pulling away from us on the main straight. We didn’t want to push more power from the engine because we wanted to keep it reliable, so to make us more competitive we have to focus in upgrade the other area, we decided to upgrade the aero package on our car because we understand no one on the grid focusing in this area and specially on a track like Pembrey a good amount of downforce will give us abit of advantage.

Qualify –

Its my first time to go out with this aero package, so in the first few laps I was just trying out how the car behave compare to before, the different is huge, the way the front end turn it is completely different now. I managed to go almost 3 secs faster than last year (ref- 1mins 8.8 last year and 1mins 6.1 this season) and remember now we are on R888 instead of A048, if its was with the right tyres the different could be more than 3.5 secs. So we qualified 2nd overall, surprisingly in front of the GT500 class RX7 by 0.2 secs

Race 1
Had a pretty good start, but lose the place to the RX7 and Kris Civic because I was trying too hard trying overtake the RX7 on the outside of the hairpin, but Kris found a gap there and I didn’t want to repeat the accident like last year, so I was taking it easy because I still not 100% sure how the car going to behave with the new aero package with cold tyres so I stay behind Kris for a few laps, it was a really good race between me and Kris EK civic, we both pushing 100% and at lap 4 we both drift into the last corner, that’s how hard we are both trying! This is definitely one of the best race ever.

Managed to take a good line and brake later for the hairpin at lap 6, so I overtook him from there and start pulling a gap from him after a few laps and cross the finish line at 1st place without any problem with the car.

So here is the first race result –

GT250 class

1st Dixon Cheng (3rd overall)
2nd Kris Dunlop
3rd Michale Clark (well done for the first race)

Video of Race 1

Race 2
Had a great start and thought it will going to be easier than race 1 as I took a defensive line to hold Kris behind me but lost a place to the Subaru from the start as I was too defensive holding the position in front of Kris. So in the next 6 laps I was following the Subaru until he made a small mistake on the last corner before the main straight then I took the slipstream and outbrake him into the hairpin and gain the position.

Just 2 laps before the finish line, the front splitter drop on the main straight due to too much downforce and the wood couldn’t withstand the high pressure, the car was suffering massive understeering straight away at every corner and the back is catching up, but luckily I have pull abit of gap from the back so I crossed the finish line at 1st place again.

Video of race 2

1st Dixon Cheng (3rd overall)
2nd Kris Dunlop
3rd Michale Clark

Race 3
Had a bad start suffer with bad wheel spin due to the wet weather and running Semi slick so got overtook by a few cars already, after 1 lap the front splitter drop again due to the rain thought the night and it soften the wood, car was understeering and we lost the straight line speed as well. After 2 laps we have got a black flag from the marshall as they saw spark coming out from the splitter so we got DNF in the 3rd race.

It would be a perfect weekend if we didn’t have the splitter problem, the car was running very reliable without any problem and we had a really good race with the others, now we will focus in develop a new Carbon splitter so it should able to withstand high downforce, you will see us with a new aero package at Silverstone in 3 weeks time.

Nippon challenge Race 1 & 2 – Snetterton race report

5th April 2009

All Nippon Challenge Race 1 and 2 report –

After a depressing year with engine reliability problems with the B20 engine, Hybrid racing and DMF Performance who were willing to Sponsor us a K20 engine with the full conversion kit approached us. During this winter break we understand as a private team we needed a fully equipped workshop to take our car to the next level, so in January 2009 I finally decided to setup my own race team. Found a new workshop within 3 weeks, so after 6 years of racing and trading with high performance car parts, Dixon Motorsports was finally officially up and running in February 2009.

Now we have a fully equipped professional running race team, racing is now an official part of our business. In the winter break we managed to find few more sponsors to support our racing in 2009.

We built our car from scratch again from new paint work, engine, roll cage, chassis upgrade with full K20 conversion, we started our new project in mid February our car was completed within 2 weeks. With our new engine from DMF performance fitted and mapped by Artech tuning. The engine was pushing 242bhp and after a testing session at Brands hatch we were happy with the new car.

So the first race event is up, we got to the track on Friday afternoon with everything setup on the track and we settle down for the night ready for the battle on Saturday.

Saturday –

Qualify –
With the new regulations we are only allowed to run either Toyo R888 or Silverstone tyres for this season, unfortunately only Toyo have an available size for our needs so we had no option but to go for Toyo’s this season. We have never raced with R888’s in the past 5 years of racing, this is our first race with these new tyres and the grip level was completely different to what we have used before so I had learn how to drive the car all over again.

We only managed 1 mins 24 secs in qualifying which was about 3 second slower than what we achieved with our old engine, pretty disspointed but we still qualified 7th in the overall class and 2nd in our GT250 class.

Race 1 –

Had a pretty good start and a good fight with the ex-touring car Honda Accord, after 5 laps of good battle I was finally able to outbrake him under the bridge at the back straight and got up to 2nd position in my class and 4th overall and I finally managed to feel the grip levels from the. The Best lap we had in the first race – 1 mins 22 secs so we gained 2 secs from the morning qualify session.

Race 2 –

Had a good start again, pulled away from the Accord and managed to stay in 2nd for the rest of the race, seeing Kris was only 4-5 secs in front of me but my car was suffering understeer from the R888 tyres so at the end we finished in 2nd and overall 4th in the class.

Not a bad start this season with no mechanical problems at all during the whole race weekend. After the first race, we now understand how competitive our car could be and we will continue to develop our car better for the next race at Pembrey.

Special thanks to the following, without their help we would never have been able to make it to the first race with a competitive car –

Camskill – tyre support
Opie oils – engine oil, gearoil, brake oil
Dixcel brake, for our full carbon disk and pad
DMF performance – K20 engine
Hybrid racing – full K swap conversion kit
HEL – Brake hose
Carbonetic – carbon 1.5 way clutch diff, twin plate clutch
