Nasa Thunderhill 25 hrs special event – Race Report

16th December 2009

Race date: 5-6 December –2009

The Worlds longest and largest race Thunderhill 25 hrs in north San Francisco
It was an honour for me to join Team Gear X and race in their K20 powered DC2 US Touring car.

This was the first time for this new Team of drivers and we finished 38th overall (96 cars start) and 11th in our class (17 cars in class).

thunderhill-02

Our team mates included the famous – Jeff (Kiwi) Owen, owner of Special Project Motorsports, Alan Stewart – New Zealand Honda Cup champion, Tom Lepper – Spoon US owner and 5 times touring champion, John Hsu – the desert racer and myself Dixon Cheng.

thunderhill-03

The Race started at 11am but we had misfiring problem and was losing a lot of power. From our experience we thought it was caused by bad fuel supplied at the track, we drilled it down to a blocked fuel injector! We got them fixed within an hour and got back out on track again.

John was the first one out on track for the first stint which he completed 30 laps (1hr). I took over on the 2nd stint without any problems for 48 laps (1 hr 30 mins) and lapped with the fastest lap of 2 mins 05 seconds on our 61st lap, only 0.2 secs slower than the Spoon FD2 Civic Type R.

Alan Steward took over the 3rd stint but due to oil on the track and due to our HID lights not working probably, he called it in after just 8 laps and we had to fix the light problem before we could get the car out again.

Jeff Owen took the 4th Stint, and after 30 laps he was hit by a BMW spinning the car off the track. We called him in to get the car checked over and changed driver’s at the same time. On our 5th stint we had our US touring car champion Tom Lepper.

After 3 laps, Tom reported a problem with the backend, saying the car was un-drivable due to the backend being very loose. He came back to the pit’s and we found one of the oil cooler hoses from the gearbox was damaged, most likely from the contact with the BMW in the last stint. This caused the gearbox to overheat and the bearing seized up, melting the casing and putting a big hole in the side of the gearbox.

thunderhill-04

We had no option but to remove the gearbox and change to a new one. Due to the extreme heat around the engine bay and gearbox, it took our mechanics 2 hours to swap the new box over and by the time our box was done the Spoon FD2 was 100 laps in front of us and it was already 10pm. Although disappointed we weren’t too concerned as we know that anything can happen during an endurance event. We still had 14 hours until the chequered flag.

John took the car out as soon as the gearbox was in but unfortunately on his 20th lap we had an engine failure – valve guide seized and caused one of the valves to hit the piston and destroy the whole engine. Luckily we had a spare engine and our mechanics quickly got the pit setup and got the engine swapped over. It took us a while to swap the engine and it was 3am by the time the engine was back in.

Our mapper took the car for a quick drive around the pit and put in a conservative map to make sure the car would last the remaining 8 hours. By the time I got back into the car again, we were almost in last position and 250 laps behind the Spoon FD2 which hadn’t suffered any problems unlike us. So we decided that I would do a double stint to try to pull back as much time as possible.

When I took over the driving seat at 4am, it was cold, dark, and I was tired but I managed to get 82 laps before we changed drivers.
It was the most beautiful scene seeing the sunrise during the race.

Pit stop

thunderhill-05

John, Jeff then Alan took over the next few stints, as the track was light again and there was only few hours left till the finish. Everyone started getting a little aggressive on track and few of the other teams blew their engine’s spilling oil on the track, our car had a few scrapes front, back and side which caused a few punctures. Our guys managed to sort all of the problems.

John took the last stint and took the chequered flag at 12pm.

This was everyone’s first attempt at a 25 hrs event, none of us had any experience at Endurance Racing and we are very proud and happy that we managed to finished the race. We are now looking forward to the 2010 event, for sure we will have a much stronger package and we will put everything from our experience into the new car.

Special thanks to -

Dixcel Brake – Supplied us with an endurance disc and pad combination along with racing brake fluid for this event. We were the only car on the grid which finished the race using one set of discs and pad’s. After the whole race the front pad’s had only used 2mm of wear and the disk was only covered in surface wear, we we’re all amazed by the braking power we had throughout the race.

TEAM GEAR-X prepares for 25HRS at Thunder hill

27th October 2009

The Special Projects Motor Sports /Team GEAR-X K-20 Powered DC2 Integra  campaigned by Jeff (Kiwi) Owen in the 2009 Honda Challenge Championship in the H1 Class, who recently clinched the So Cal H1 Championship on points, has been sold to an Off Road Racer, John Hsu. He is no stranger to Touring car racing, having competed in Grand Am in 2004, his previous racing endeavors since 2001 have included club racing, endurance racing and rally racing with the California Rally Series, and not to mention having raced in the Baja 500 and 1000 on numerous occasions with his class 1 and 10 buggies.

gear-x

John has decided to take another approach to endurance racing, this time in the very competitive K-20 Powered Honda Challenge H1 Touring Car.

After completing the deal on the sale of Special Projects Race Car, Hsu was so impressed by the accumulated race craft and car set up skills, and the facilities of the Special Projects Team, he immediately commissioned The Kiwi’s shop to prepare the car for the 2009 25 Hrs at Thunder Hill.

Work began immediately on the #65 Integra after kiwi clinched the So Cal H1 Championship in points on October 10th a few days after his 60th Birthday.

The First task the team had to perform was to build one of John’s other purchases- An immaculate DC2 Type R Integra to Honda Challenge H2 Specs. Within a month the car has been built, tested and is now ready for competition at the November 7th. & 8th. Button willow event.

John’s transition back to road racing has been rapid and pleasing under the wing of the Kiwi. Often criticized for his aggressive driving style; Owen said “I always race to win! And I would never want to drive in any series where competitors are only required to give 7/10ths. Race Hard! – Race Fair! Is my motto” “I am really pleased with John’s progress. He is courageous yet cautious, he has a desire to win, but is a sportsman as well, and he’s very easy on the equipment, his lap times are coming down rapidly, he is smooth, consistent, and fast and will be very competitive next season in the H1 or H2 car depending on which class he chooses to run in.”

Appointed Team Manager, Kiwi has in a few short weeks hand picked and assembled a formidable International Team for the 25 hour event. Working with friend and former team mate (Fastom) Tom Lepper, a 5 time class winner at the 25hr. Toms input has been invaluable in assembling the team and strategizing for all possible eventualities.

Using existing Special Projects personnel and hand picked members from John’s very experienced Off Road Race Crew, and some of Tom Leppers 25 hr veterans the team will be a force to be reckoned with.

dixon-chengdixon-cheng-dc2

The Team will consist of: Drivers: John Hsu, Jeff (Kiwi) Owen, Tom Lepper,  Dixon Cheng, Current UK Nippon Challenge Champ and Al Stewart the reigning New Zealand Honda Challenge Champion

Crew Chiefs, Eric Hernandez and Shawn Moore.

Callos Racing crew members Daniel and Norm, Javier, Anthony, Auggie, Robert, Hector, and Sean.

Special Projects Crew:  Mauricio Rosillo, Brian Slames and Greg Leone.

GEAR-X will be the primary sponsor of the car, reflecting the success, and sales that the Gear-X products have enjoyed over the last four years in Touring Car and Rally Racing world wide. The 25 hours at Thunder hill will be a great test for the companies products, and depending on the Class entered, the yet to be released Gear-X Transmission Cooler, Axels, Gear-X Competition Clutch, Vertigate Shifter and new Close ratio, and Straight Cut Final Drive Gears may be put through their paces.

Dixon Cheng brings welcomed additional sponsorship from the famed Japanese Performance Brake manufacturers Dixcel.

The #65 car has been fitted with the full range of HardRace suspension components from control arms, camber and toe adjusters to Spherical bearings on every suspension pick up point. The team has had great success with these products throughout the season and the 25 hour event will be a great test bed and tool for future sales. (Big Al) Alan Stewart the reigning Honda Challenge New Zealand Champion will be joining the team for the event. Stewart is the New Zealand Distributor for GEAR-X and the founder of the Honda Challenge Series in that country. He brings a wealth of competition driving experience, grassroots innovation and endurance racing skills to the team.

Team GEAR-X – Special Projects Motor Sports, Sponsors, Drivers and Crew wish all competitors Good Luck for the remainder of the 2009 Racing Season.

Nippon Challenge Final Round – Brands Hatch

24th October 2009

Image

Since the last race from Snetterton back in September, we have done a few upgrades on the car to prepare the car for the final round. First we manufactured a custom made Carbon Fibre splitter as the original wood splitter kept braking every race due to the high down force. Brands hatch is quite a bumpy circuit so we decided to make a Carbon Fibre Splitter and see if it lasts longer due to the increased strength also giving us more stable down force. We have changed the wheels from 16s back to 15s as we believe this is more suitable for Brands Hatch from our data from previous races.

We arrived on track on Thursday morning for testing, we knew the track was going to be wet over th race weekend so we set the geometry to a wet suspension setup for testing on track, even though the track was perfectly dry and sunny on Thursday .We were still lapping mid 53 secs a lap with the wet setup so we are very happy with the results and feeling positive for the race.

Race day

The weather report was correct, as expected we arrived the track at 6:30am and the track was already very wet. Our mechanics gave the car a quick check over and we were ready for qualifying.

Qualify

We were the only ones running Semi slick tyres in the wet, all the others were running Wet cut slick’s. More and more rain started to fall, which started to worry us a little. We tried to go out early for a clear flying lap but unfortunately the track was unbelievably wet. We were the first group to go out in the morning, but by the time I had completed my outlap, I had unfortunately caught onto the back of the pack of car’s on their outlaps, who were obviously testing the grip levels of the track slowly. I spent my next 13-14 laps overtaking other slower cars and just before the session finished I only managed to pull a 59.5 secs putting me on pole in my GT250 class and 6th Overall, Kris Dunlop was only 0.1 secs behind.
1st – Dixon Cheng 59.5

2st – Kris Dunlop – 59.6

3rd – Michael Clark – 1 mins 2 secs

Image

1st Race

We decided not to switch to Wet cut slicks looking at the qualifying results we thought we would be able keep up as long as we didn’t make any mistakes, again we were the only one’s running Semi slick for the race.

I had a pretty good start and managed to keep myself in front of the Buddyclub DC5 for a lap until we hit the straight we could clearly see the power difference, The Buddyclub DC5 were in GT300 so were not racing with us so I didn’t take any risk’s as I didn’t want the same problem which happened last year. (engine blow up in the last lap in 2008 Brands hatch final) We let them pass us on the straight. After seeing Kris’s car disappearing from my mirror then the whole race was pretty straightforward without any problems. We finished 5th overall and 1st in our GT250 Class

1st – Dixon Cheng

2nd – Michael Clark

3rd Lee Bennett – Neal

DNF – Kris Dunlop due to an incident with the Subaru on the last lap.

First race Videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBApf84Es3Q

Race 2

Had a pretty good start again and over took the Js Racing DC2 in the Super GT class. We lead all the way until we hit the main straight, the Js Racing DC2 were running in the Super GT class, meaning they were allowed to run Dunlop Wet slick’s so they overtook us easily on the straight due to the extra traction they got from the last corner. They were in different class anyway so we didn’t try to keep up with them. Again we were leading all the way from the start to finish 1st in class and 5th overall without any problems.

1st – Dixon Cheng

2nd – Michael Clark

3rd Lee Bennett – Neal

We also set the fastest lap in both Race 1 and 2 in our class.

It was a great weekend for us, and was a perfect ending to the season with 2 class wins. Our K20 DC2 will now be retire and we have already started building a new car for next season. We yet to decide if we will be racing in Nippon Challenge again or Brit car next season. We will announce next year’s plans in January.

Nippon Challenge Race Race 10 and 11 – Snetterton Race Report

25th August 2009

After our last race from Cadwell park we have switched to a few new parts on our DC2. First special thanks to Buddyclub for providing us with a set of Asian Touring car cams to try out on our race engine, it made 242bhp with the new cams with only a stock intake system so we are very impressed with the results.

We had a bit of drama just a week before the race, first our Vtec switch decided to stop working on the dyno so we had to order a brand new one from Honda and it didn’t turn up until Wednesday so it was a bit of rush for us. A major problem occurred as we broke the Carbonetic 1.5 way diff, probably due to my practice launching with cold gearbox. So we took the gearbox out on Friday morning to swap back to a stock EP3 open diff, we didn’t get to the track until 11.30pm on Friday night.

Qualify
We started out with a bit of traffic and also needed to re-learn how to drive the car again with an oem diff. The car’s behaviour was completely different with the stock diff and our qualifying time was 2 secs slower than our first race at Snetterton back in March. At the same track so we are pretty disappointed with the result aswell as being stuck in traffic, we knew we were in for a tough race.
So we qualify 2nd in our class with Kris EK civic in front of me.

Race 1 –
After qualifying, we made some fine tuned the suspension and tyre pressures for race one.
We made a pretty good start and overtook a few car ‘s but Kris shut the door at turn one so I had no where to go but to sit behind him. After 2 laps, the safety car was out and stayed out for the next 6 laps. After the safety car, we tried to find to speed and gain on the cars in front but we were really struggling with straight line speed, so I just tried to relax to re-learn the car with the OEM diff and we started to find some speed again. We managed to bring our lap time down to 1mins 21.7, which was 2 secs quicker than our qualifying time.
Race 1 result –
1st EK – Kris (4th overall)
2nd DMS DC2 Dixon (5th Overall)
Race 2 –
Had a really good start and Kris tried to defend his line at the start so I got push into the pit lane exit to overtake him before the first corner, so we got to first place for the next 2 corners, back to the main straight due to the high downforce setup We seems struggle with straight line speed, Kris took my slipstream and jump to my left and overtook me before the left hander and I got push to run wide so I got stuck behind him at 2nd place again in the 2nd race. We did almost the exact same lap time almost everylap when we look back to the data.

It was a very hard weekend for us and the car was very difficult to drive due to the stock EP3 open diff. We are going to skip the next race at Mallory park so we will have more time to get the car ready for the final race at Brands hatch, we will come up with new Aero package, diff and some other small update with the car. Hopefully it will bring us a win in the final

Race 2 result
1st EK – Kris (4th overall)
2nd DMS DC2 Dixon (5th Overall)

Great thanks to our sponsors, without any of their support we won’t have a successful season like this –

Nippon Challenge Race Race 8 and 9 – Cadwell Park Race Report

28th June 2009

We arrived trackside early on Friday as we were doing a test day on Saturday to get a feel of the track and allow us to do some final adjustments to the car.

Test day went very well, we spent 2 hours on track and got our time down to 1mins 43sec.

We were very happy with the result, however we soon realised the rear engine mount bracket had snapped in 2. There was nothing we could do about it so we just hopeed for the best that is was going to be fine for the race.
Qualify
We got stuck in the middle of the pack and got held up by slow traffic, so the qualifying didn’t go very well, our best lap was a 1 min 46secs which put us 7th overall and 3rd in class. After qualifying, we had another problem, the outer driveshaft CV had snapped and was leaking gearbox oil. We temporarily fixed them with Cable ties and glue in hope that it was going to be good for the race.

Race 1
We had a pretty good start and managed to jump a few places and got myself up into 5th, I think this was down to Carbonetic giving us an amazing twin plate clutch which made the launch much easier, so thanks to Carbonetic :) . Lap 2 Michael EK outbroke himself and went straight into the tyre wall allowing us to gain another place. The MR2 also blew their engine at the other side of the track leaving a lot of oil spillage on the track meaning the safety car was called out for the next 4 laps. When the safety car finally went back into the pits we only had 2 laps left. My car was suffer heavily with understeer, due to the gearbox oil leaking to the passenger side front tyre. We finished 5th overall and 2nd in class.

Race 1 result
1st Kris – Orange EK
2nd Dixon – K20 DC2
3rd Andre – Accord
DNF – Michael K20 EK.

Race 2
We had a really good start again and jumped one place up to 4th and managed keep up with Kris EK for 2 laps which was hard because his car was really quick due to pulling a lot more power than us. After 2 laps, due to a shifter failure we lost 2nd and 4th gears and saw Kris pull a big gap from us.

So I finished the race in 2nd in class again and 4th overall. Surprisingly we still lapped 1 mins 43 secs with all those problems, it was still a fantastic result for us and we are happy with the 2nd place.

We now have a 6 week break until the end of August when we are at Snetterton. We will be there with a new engine from DMF performance which will hopefully give us around 250bhp and all issues from Cadwell will be ironed out.

After the successful race at Pembrey 3 weeks ago, we understand now our aero package is working very well on the track but the front splitter design was too weak to support all the downforce its create and caused us a DNF due to the splitter drop to the ground at the 3rd race back in Pembrey. Also we notice our splitter was sitting below the legal limit by 10mm so when we got back to our workshop we have a complete new design which allow us to adjust the splitter back up to the 75mm legal limit or to wherever we wanted depends on the track condition.

Silverstone is always the track I don’t enjoy much because lack of corners and also our car is down on power, so we didn’t expect a good result there. However we looked at the weather report on Friday morning and forecasting heavy rain is expected on the race day, we were all excited by this great news as we know we have better advantage to setup our car in the wet condition. So we put our car back on the alignment machine and gave a wet track setup before we left to Silverstone.

Qualify –
The track got even more wet in the morning, 4th gear wheels spinning on the main straight wet! I ran out to test the grip level for a few laps , the car was handling very well even on worn R888 semi slick, with the others are running cut R888 in our class, I did one fast lap just before the last lap and did a 1mins 21.1 put us on top of our class and 6 overall. All the car in front of us are in either GT300 or 500 bhp class and all 4 wheels drive.
Result –
GT250 class
Pole (6th overall) – Dixon Cheng (DMS DC2 running Semi slick) 1mins 21.1
2nd (8th overall)– Andre (ex-btcc accord) 1 mins 22.1
3rd (14th overall)– Kris (orange Civic) 1 mins 24
4th (18th overall) Paul G (DC5 integra) 1 mins 25.1
5th (20th overall) Michael (K20 ITB civic) 1 mins 25.49

Race 1 –
After the qualify, we made a few fine tuning on the suspension and tyres pressure for the race one.
Had a pretty good start with and a few subarus spun on the first corner so we took the 4th place overall and lead my class from there. The track was even more wet then in qualify and it was almost impossible to put the foot down on the straight even on 4th gear mainly due to the worn R888, but it was fun and manageable, The whole race was pretty relax and I was taking it very easy until the end.

Race 1 result –
1st DC2 – Dixon cheng (4th overall)
2nd EK – Kris (5th overall)
3rd EK – Michael (11th overall)
4th Accord – Andre (13th overall)
DNF – Paul G

Race 2 –
After race 1 it was a big relief for us because we know our car is very competitive in this wet condition with our wet track alignment setup and aero package so we relax a little and even setup a BBQ in our pit just before the race 2 only later when we line up on the grid and I started on 6th position, I notice Kris have a new grid position which sit right behind me so I thought this race is going to be more interesting as he is running on Wet cut slick and I was still running on worn R888 Semi Slick
The start wasn’t too bad and I close the door to block Kris to overtake me before the turn 1 and got Kris behind me, it was a huge relief as I know the track is still very wet and I saw myself pulling a gap from him after the first lap so I just focus in battling with the Subaru in front of me. We had a great battle and in lap 6 he made a mistake at turn 1 so I got up a place into 5th. From then it was pretty relax like on the race one and we finished in 1st again in our GT250 class and 5th overall with only 7 secs behind the GT500 class Mitsubishi EVO.
We also got the fastest lap in our class with 1 mins 19s.

Race 2 result
1st DC2 – Dixon Cheng (5th overall)
2nd EK – Kris (6th Overall)
3rd EK – Michale (12th overall)
4th DC5 – Paul G (23rd overall)
DNF –Andre due to the crash at turn 1

Once again, it was a great weekend for us as we know we finally have a completely legal and competitive car in this season and our setup work well on the track. Although we have now won a few races, we will not stop our development and we will bring out a better car with new chassis and aero upgrade for Cadwell park on 28th June.

Great thanks to our sponsors, without any of their support we won’t have a successful season like this –

Need to special thanks to Dixcel Brake at this round as they providing the excellent Carbon disk and pad which can work from this extreme condition when the others are having problem to get their brake into temperature and we already have full braking power from the first corner until the end without any problem.
